Die cast in zinc alloy #3, this connector housing measures 2.25" x 2" x .5" and weighs 2.5 ounces. It is sold by a high-end connector manufacturer who, in the connector industry, is known for providing premium products in both performance and appearance. To aid in the appearance of this connector, texturing was added to the die cavity to give the part a cohesive and dramatic look when it is plated with a dull nickel finish. Not seen clearly in the photo are tangs on the three cylindrical "barrels" that are cast in place and then precisely bent inwards to give the connecting patch plug the proper amount of tension for a snug fit. Superior ductility of zinc alloys allows this deformation of the tangs to be consistent and permanent. Zinc's ductility is also handy for use in bonding zinc castings to mating parts. Typically small connecting bosses are cast on a zinc component and a mating part containing mounting holes can be set over the bosses. Once positioned, a swaging operation is performed to peen the bosses over and a rivet like bond is the result. |
