This latch handle assembly is made up of two zinc castings (latch and handle) which are used on tractor trucks to secure compartment doors on such things as the fire extinguisher and sleeper compartments. Tool life and surface finish requirements were the two predominant reasons why zinc was chosen for this application. This assembly is used in large quantities so zinc was an appropriate choice in terms of tool life since premium steel dies used in the die casting process typically last as much as ten times longer when casting zinc as opposed to casting aluminum. Also appropriate for components that require a hardware finish suitable for bright chrome, zinc was chosen for its excellent surface finish qualities since these two parts do require a perfect finish - polished, bright chrome plate.
