This component is die cast in zinc alloy #3. It weighs .7 pounds and measures 4.5" x 4.5" x .75". It is used in multi-drive cabinets as a blank spacer to consume space not intended for a hard drive. After die casting, the part receives a bead blast finish to remove any minute flash (very thin leakage of metal) that may not have been removed in the trimming operation, and then clips are installed. The difficult to cast webbing feature is especially prone to flash due to its formation by a moving slide in the tool. The complete and absolute absence of flash is a critical requirement for this part because of its use in a precision electronic enclosure. Del Mar's experience with electronic applications like this allow us to engineer the casting process with a critical eye on this flashing issue. Some die casters tout 100% flash-free casting, but in reality there is no such thing, it is an inherent quality of any die casting process. However, with the proper engineering of tooling and process controls, Del Mar has been successful with this component and with scores of other electronic applications where our castings have performed with zero defects in terms of flash issues. |
