This dial is used on commercial safes and is die cast in zinc alloy #3. It is 3 inches in diameter, approximately 1 inch tall and it weighs .4 lbs. Die casting this component in zinc allows for the surface finish to be of hardware quality and suitable for decorative plating applications. Typically this dial is plated in satin chrome, but bright chrome and even bright brass are sometimes applied when required. Zinc was chosen not only for its achievable surface finish, but also for its tool life characteristics. The unit die producing this dial has been in service for 20+ years and has produced hundreds of thousands of parts without replacement. Extended tool life is an important benefit of zinc alloys and is an excellent choice when annual quantity requirements are high and especially if the component requires a decoratively plated finish.
