When Captain Scott O'Grady, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot was shot down over Bosnia in June, 1995, he ejected from his aircraft and came down in hostile territory where armed men hunted him. Capt. O'Grady carried with him a radio/locator device for use in being rescued from just such a situation. Unfortunately, the plastic housing on the radio he was carrying became cracked, evidently in the bailout. Fortunately, the armed men hunting for him were not successful and Capt. O'Grady was rescued safely. Alarmed by the cracked plastic housing when this unit was put to a real life test, the Air Force ordered that the housing material must be stronger while maintaining its light weight. The answer found was in die cast magnesium and Del Mar has been proud to produce the housing and cover for this critically important product.
