A manufacturer of motorized scooters had a problem. The wheels they had produced and installed on the scooters were failing in the field. They had to find a material and a manufacturing process that could produce a strong yet lightweight wheel. A magnesium die casting provided the necessary requirements. Magnesium, being the lightest of all of the commonly die cast metals and the strongest in a strength to weight ratio was the perfect solution. The wheel is cast in two parts with each half being produced in one two cavity die. Once cast, the halves are then bolted together to make the complete wheel. Since switching to magnesium, the scooter manufacturer reports that the field failures have stopped while their costs have improved. |
