This magnesium vial tray is used to hold 40 vials of various liquids in a medical analysis instrument. The vials are inserted into and removed from the tray robotically. The manufacturer of the medical instrument first tried to use trays produced in plastic but they did not maintain sufficient rigidity and tended to warp and/or creep. This was problematic as the vials changed positioning when the plastic would deform and the robot was constantly breaking the glass vials since they were not in their proper positions. Next the manufacturer tried casting the trays with aluminum. This too failed as the flow characteristics of aluminum could not fill out the extremely difficult to fill cavity geometry. Magnesium came to the rescue with its greater flow characteristics and sufficiently fills the remote cavity sections that aluminum could not. This casting was submitted by Del Mar Die Casting in an international magnesium casting competition and was awarded the grand prize.
